Sweet Traditions & Special Occasions

Swedes have a famously sweet tooth, and cakes and desserts have a special place in both everyday life and celebrations. From a simple slice of cake with coffee to elaborate layer cakes for birthdays, weddings and midsummer, there is nearly always an excuse to bring something sweet to the table.

Many traditional desserts make use of ingredients that could be preserved or stored through the long winter: apples and other orchard fruits, wild berries, cream, milk and grains. Summer, meanwhile, brings strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, often served simply with cream or transformed into pies, puddings and cakes.

Here you’ll find traditional Swedish cakes and desserts – homely puddings and fruit dishes, beloved classics and the cakes that turn an ordinary coffee break into a proper Swedish fika.
